For newer Volvo models, obtaining the vehicle password is a required step before key programming. This article explains the complete procedure step by step.
Why CEM Password Is Required for 2023 Volvo XC60 Key Programming?
Before performing Volvo XC60 smart key programming, you must obtain the vehicle bus password.
There are two methods:
Query the password through a third-party service
Read the password directly from the CEM (Central Electronic Module)
In this example, we use KD-X4 Locksmith’s Universal Tool to read the CEM module data and retrieve the required password.
Step 1 – Remove and Read Volvo XC60 CEM Module with KD-X4
Disassemble the CEM module from the vehicle.
Locate the correct wiring diagram.
Connect the wiring according to the diagram.
Open KD-X4.
Enter IMMO programming mode.
Select the correct chip type.
Confirm proper cable connection.
Click Read to retrieve CEM data.
Save the data file after successful reading.
Once completed, reinstall the CEM module back into the vehicle.
Step 2 – Generate Remote Key for 2023 Volvo XC60
Before matching the key to the vehicle, you must first generate the remote.
On KD-X4, select Remote Function → Generate Remote
Choose vehicle model: Volvo XC60
Place the key into the coil area
Wait until remote generation is successful
The remote is now ready for programming.
Step 3 – Perform Volvo XC60 Smart Key Matching
Now proceed with Volvo smart key programming using KD-X4.
Enter IMMO Programming → Volvo → Select by Vehicle
Choose the correct model (e.g., XC60 / S60 platform)
Read the current number of keys
Select Smart Key Programming
Load the previously read CEM module data
Follow on-screen instructions
During the procedure:
Close all vehicle doors
Turn the start knob to the right once and release
Place the smart key in the indicated sensing area
Wait until the system shows Programming Successful.

After completion:
Check the updated key count
Test remote locking and unlocking
Start the vehicle to confirm successful key programming
